The Tapolci Foundation just had a great event to benefit the Greater Washington County Food Bank with our #FundTheTruck fundraiser. Thanks to your support and with help from Mad Mex in Robinson Township we were able to raise over $2,500!
This was truly a success. Raising funds is a major focus for most non-profits, and while asking for donations sometimes you need to spice things up a little. Let’s explore some options that you can use as a way to raise funds as well as expose your organization.
Organize a Charity Run – As someone who has at least ten bibs hanging on her wall and just as many if not more event shirts, I can attest that these events will bring in a crowd. It’s a fun way to get out and support an organization, have fun with friends, and be active. Though there are some start up costs involved, the return is great. Not only will you raise money for your non-profit, but you will also be able to promote your mission and maybe gain a few new volunteers in the process.
Luncheon or Gala Event – Everyone loves a reason to get dressed up and have a fancy night out. Though this may be a little more costly than some of the other fundraising ideas listed, it can be a great opportunity to discuss the organization’s mission. This could become an annual event your supporters look forward to each year.
Partner with a Local Retailer or Restaurant – Just as the Tapolci Foundation did, your group can pair with a local business and organize a night of support and profit sharing. Also, many businesses have “pre-made” fundraising coupons your organization can sell. Though you won’t be able to convey much about your mission this way, you will have less time tied up in planning.
Haunted House or Hayrides – This event is something everyone can have fun with volunteers included. Haunted houses, hayrides, corn mazes, and bonfires are popular weekend activities for everyone. They are also activities that are inexpensive to execute. Don’t think you have the time to pull something like this together? See if you can pair with one that is established in your area and work together to raise funds and a profit.
Yard/Rummage Sale – Think about all the stuff you have lying around your house. I bet there are more than an item or two that you’ve never or rarely use. They are in good shape but are just taking up space. Now think about giving that item a new life for a good cause. This is a very simple and low-cost way to raise money for your non-profit; you really just need some price stickers and volunteers to work the event and bring in items. The best part is that when the event is over all the money you’ve made goes straight to your cause; no overhead to pay for!

April has been a very eventful month for all of us here at the Tapolci Foundation! We’ve certainly been picking up the pace on our philanthropic efforts outside of the office in the past few weeks. Here at the Tapolci Foundation, we are always sharing ways to help you get involved with nonprofit organizations. Today the sun is shining, I watched robins hopping around outside, my phone even told me today is a great day for a run; spring has sprung. Though March 20 was the official first day of spring, for many people spring doesn’t officially begun until the beginning of the baseball season. Last Friday, April 7, was the Pittsburgh Pirates home opener. Though the weather made it feel more like a Steelers home game (I was the girl in about 5 layers, wrapped in a blanket), this game ushers in a new season, and new opportunities, especially for the Pittsburgh Pirates Charities.

Take a minute to imagine how your life would be if food wasn’t easily attainable by simply walking to your pantry, opening it up, and grabbing a bite to eat in the attempt to silent the insatiable growling of your stomach.
Now imagine the inability to purchase items at your local grocery store to feed your family. What if you had to chosen to feed your three children by sacrificing a meal each night of the week for yourself? You may feel that these scenarios are unimaginable. How could you ever have to struggle to obtain something as simple as food?
In a country that wastes billions of pounds of food each year, it’s almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet every day, there are millions of children and adults who do not get the meals they need to thrive. With recent government funding cuts to food access/SNAP programs, it is becoming increasingly difficult for families living in poverty to afford food. In fact, the lack of governmental funding to access, or other “food-stamp” programs is literally costing families one meal a week. Imagine that feeling. Hunger- one night a week, every week.
The Tapolci Foundation understands the importance of capturing excess food and providing it to people in need. When we heard that our friends at a local food bank needed a truck to deliver food to families facing this crisis; we made sure to call our team together to help.
The Greater Washington County Food Bank has been providing groceries and nutritional education to food insecure residents of Washington County for the past 30 years. Through their network of 48 distribution sites and seven agencies throughout the county, this nonprofit primarily relies on community support to help the over 25,000 people who are food insecure.
The Food Bank delivered more than 2.7 million pounds of food last year alone-a whopping 62% increase over the prior year (we were there to sort just a fraction of it). However, their fleet of vehicles became outdated and unfit for the task of delivering the food. With the goal to replace a 1999 international refrigerated truck with a new 24′ truck, the Food Bank reached out to us to help #FundTheTruck .
Our answer? A party of course! The #FundTheTruck event will take place on Thursday, April 6th, 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Mad Mex in Robinson Township, PA. Fifty-fifty raffles will occur during the evening as well as a Chinese Auction.
Board Member Jeff Tapolci stated, “When we formed the Tapolci Foundation, donating to organizations in our community such as the Greater Washington County Food Bank was our main purpose.” He continued, “As a company, we will be volunteering at the Food Bank at the end of April, but we also want to present them with a check with donations raised from this event and online so the impact will be greater.”
