This year is already flying by. I can’t believe we’ve already made it to February! Even though we’ve had a pretty mild winter (so far), I am so ready for spring. We in Pennsylvania have this quirky tradition of consulting a furry oracle of sorts as to when spring will actually begin. Of course I’m talking about Groundhog Day and our friend Punxsutawney Phil (who actually is a Philomina, I think)! By now we know that our “weather-animal” has seen his shadow and we can look forward to six more weeks of winter, but let’s all Think Spring anyway! Here are several volunteer opportunities and events that will help get you out of your winter funk and active in the community:
Global Links- Family Volunteer Day- Saturday, March 4th
Looking for a way to introduce your kids to giving back or just want to have some family together time? Look no further! Sign up for one of two shifts and help Global Links pack surplus medical supplies to ship to needy areas around the world. Can’t make it in March? Check out the many opportunities to get involved on their website. Even better, if you work in the medical field, see how your workplace can get involved with donations!
Pittsburgh Project-Volunteer Craftsman
Hopefully, our furry prognosticator in Punxsutawney calls for an early spring and we can start on our spring cleaning. If you are handy with a hammer and searching for a way to help in the community, check out the Pittsburgh Project. By signing up to be a Volunteer Craftsman you will help at-need seniors in our city complete repairs on their homes. Not great at repairs? This group also has tutor, gardening, and companionship programs you can get involved with.
Cupid’s Undie Run for The Children’s Tumor Foundation- Saturday, February 11th
Grab your Valentine, your running shoes, and your undies! This 1 mile fun run will help you kick off your springtime training (if you haven’t started already) and help find a cure for children with neurofibromatosis (NF). Fun, fitness, and philanthropy count me in!
Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy- Schenley Park Volunteer Sweeps- Saturday, February 25th
We are blessed with some beautiful parks here in the city of Pittsburgh and the outlying areas. These parks are always quite populated and hold great community events during the fair weather days of spring and summer. Help keep these parks looking beautiful and work to prepare the grounds for spring activities. Volunteers will work to clear vines and invasive plants as well as clean up the park. Don’t have your own pair of gloves? No worries, tools and gloves will be provided.
This Groundhog Day keep your fingers crossed and hope Phil’s shadow is nowhere to be seen. Let’s all take a page out of Bill Murray’s book and try to get this holiday and the rest of the year right by helping one another. None of us want to repeat the same day over and over again, so let’s take action, get out there and help, and change the world bit by bit!
