Season of Giving: Pittsburgh Volunteer Opportunities for December

ChristmasWe are a week into December, the holidays are quickly approaching, and the weather (sadly) started getting colder. The Season of Giving is here! At a time where we are running around working to complete our holiday to-do list, many others are struggling to just get by. This season, if you are looking to give back to the community there are many worthy options. Here are several organizations with volunteer opportunities for this December and beyond.

 Project Linus
Call yourself a “happy hooker” who likes to crochet, knit or sew? Check out Project Linus! This group is active year round and works to create blankets and other items, “to provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.” “Blanketeers” can get involved in local chapters across the county. You donate projects as an individual or join in with an established group. If you are crafty with a needle, check out the Pittsburgh chapter’s website and help spread some warmth this holiday.

Team Rubicon
Calling all Veterans, First Responders, and “Kick(butt) Civilians!” Team Rubicon (TR) works to unite the skills of military personnel, First responders, and civilians with applicable skills to deploy as part of rapid emergency response teams. These groups operate nationwide and complete a multitude of tasks like cleaning up from natural disasters to community service projects. If you are in the PA area and want to get involved with Region III’s activities check out how you can help TR with your personal skill set. This month the group will be participating in Wreaths Across America and visiting the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies to place wreaths on graves of fallen heroes on December 15th and 17th.

412 Food Rescue
Ever wonder what happens to all the perfectly good but left over food at restaurants and bakeries?
Many times it is just thrown out; that’s where 412 Food Rescue steps in. This group coordinates pick up from different food sellers to give to beneficiary organizations that can utilize the items. You can volunteer to help transport foodstuffs throughout the year. You can also help sell Christmas Trees this weekend on Saturday December 10th and Sunday December 11th where proceeds will benefit the food rescue.

The Blessing Board

From humble beginnings in a garage to a now 46,000 square foot warehouse and office space, the Blessing Board works to provide families in need with household goods and furniture free of charge. This group relies on donations and a growing group of volunteers at their warehouse as well as Avenue Coffee; a cafe where there is no charge for your beverages but donations are greatly appreciated and support The Blessing Board. December can be a very busy ti
me, but if you can spare a few hours and give back it really can make a difference in the community. Think about participating as a group from the office or with your family. Make it a holiday tradition! As always if you don’t have time to spare these groups all take monetary donations if you would like to contribute in that way.

Are you involved in an organization that has volunteer opportunities or a charitable event coming up this month? We’d love to hear about it! Please share with us!
