#GivingTuesday: What It is and How You Can Help

Now that Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday have come to pass, (and we all officially ate and shopped too much) it is time to focus on giving back. #GivingTuesday is a global movement to support nonprofit organizations during the winter charitable giving season. This year it will be celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, November 29, 2016.

#givingtuesdayThe 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City, and the United Nations Foundation executed the first #GivingTuesday in 2012. These organizations felt that the philanthropic community needed a response to consumerism in the post-Thanksgiving season. The team consists of influencers from organizations and corporations that believe in giving back. In addition to these influencers, over 30,000 organizations participate in giving and receiving on #GivingTuesday.

How Charity is Trending Because of #GivingTuesday

As the dust settles upon the wreckage of that which was the chaos of Black Friday, manic shoppers retreat to their homes and power up their computer monitors to quench their bargain-lust on Cyber Monday.

In an effort to revive philanthropy during the holidays and combat the materialism of major shopping days, such as Black Friday, Giving Tuesday was born with hundreds of millions participating around the world each year.
